Effective 10 October 2026
The short version: the app keeps your study data on your iPhone. There are no accounts, no ads, no analytics and no tracking. We don't collect your personal data, and we don't sell or share it.
Japan Cram Adventure (“the app”) and japancram.com (“the website”) are made by Alex Knight (“we”, “us”). If you have a question about this policy, email support@japancram.com.
Everything you do in the app stays on your device: your review schedule and answers, the places, stamps, postcards and kanji cards you collect, your handwriting attempts, and your settings (such as your level and your character's look). We don't run a server that receives it, and we can't see it.
If your iPhone backs up to iCloud or to a computer, Apple's backup includes the app's data, under Apple's terms. If you use Export backup in Settings, the app creates a file and you choose where it goes; we never receive it.
The app has no sign-in and no advertising. It contains no analytics, crash-reporting or tracking software, and it doesn't use your advertising identifier.
Some exercises ask you to say a word out loud. If you allow it, the app uses your microphone and Apple's speech recognition to check what you said. Recognition happens on your iPhone when your device supports it; otherwise Apple may process the audio as described in Apple's privacy policy. We don't record, store or receive your voice. You can turn either permission off at any time in the iOS Settings app.
If you allow notifications, the app schedules study reminders on your device. They are not sent from a server.
The one-time unlock is sold through Apple's App Store. Apple handles the payment; we never see your payment details or your Apple Account. The app only learns whether the unlock has been purchased.
“Report a problem” opens your own email app with a message filled in: what you were looking at (for example the card, story line or question), the app version, the iOS version and your device model. Nothing is sent unless you send it. If you email us, we receive your email address and whatever you write, and we use them only to reply and to fix the problem. Ask and we'll delete your messages.
japancram.com is hosted by Cloudflare. To deliver the pages and protect the site from abuse, Cloudflare processes technical information such as your IP address and browser type, as described in Cloudflare's privacy policy. The website sets no cookies and uses no analytics.
The app is for anyone learning Japanese. Because it doesn't collect personal data, it doesn't knowingly collect data from children.
Depending on where you live (for example in the EU, the UK or Japan), you have rights over your personal data, including access and deletion. Because we hold none beyond emails you send us, those requests come down to your email correspondence, and we're glad to help.
If the app ever starts to collect data (for example, if an online feature is added), we will update this policy before that change ships and change the date at the top.
